Shibamata

$

There are still a few places left in Tokyo where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the modern city and go to experience more of the traditional Edo side. Kawagoe is located outside of Tokyo but not too far away and then there is Asakusa. Only recently discovered another area in East Tokyo called Shibamata [柴又] and went along one Sunday afternoon to check it out.

To get to Shibamata, take the Kanamachi line [金町線] from Asakusa [浅草] and get off at Shibamata station [柴又駅]. The area you want to explore is right outside the station.
[gmap=35.756551, 139.875327]

I love the train crossings which allow you to take photos like this.

You may want to go to Shibamata on an empty stomach as there are plenty of snacks to nibble on as soon as you step outside the station.

The bronze statue is of Tora-san [寅さん] who stars in the 1968 drama series that was aired on Fuji TV "Otoko wa tsurai yo" [男はつらいよ]. Shibamata started to become more popular after the series started its broadcast.

One side of Shibamata has modern supermarkets and pachinko parlors while the other side has traditional Edo style buildings.

Outside the station are a few maps which you wont really need - save a tree and just follow the crowds instead.

Not much info about the "Golden poo" [金のうんこ] apart from that it endows you with good luck. Wonder why our daily poo no bring good luck?
I guess its best to have one of these in your pocket instead of a real one after a night of spicy food, corn and spinach.
To say "Poo" in Japanese you can use the words Unchi [うんち], Unko [うんこ] or the medical term is Otsuuji [おつうじ].

After you have picked up some poo, you can then pick up some more food.

Which came first? Vending Machine Red or this?

Some train station goodies. The white paper on top is to prevent folks from opening the lid and taking handfuls without paying for them - in Japan this works well.

After following everybody for a while (don't follow too close - keep a distance and look away if looked at), you will end up in a pedestrianized road like this lined with traditional wooden buildings.

The chap standing in front of the purple table on the right of the photo will read your fortune. You can see these fortune tellers all over Tokyo - Shinjuku, Ginza and even in our local shopping arcade.

The pedestrianized road is called Taishakuten Sando [帝釈天参道] and leads up to Shibamata Taishakuten [柴又帝釈天] Shrine.

Spotted some Gacha - the one on the top left has got eavesdropping devices which are called Touchouki [盗聴器].

First up its time to om nom on some lovely curry udon.

Some mochi sprinkled with kinako topping - a traditional Japanese sweet.

Map of the Shibamata area which has many shrines to explore.

Taishakuten Sando is filled with stalls like these that sell warm snacks to nibble on.

One of my fave foods - Konyaku.

There were lots of young ladies with SLRs out n about.

This shop sells pickles and other side dishes that one would eat with rice. This lady is handing out some samples of dried fish which tastes lovely when sprinkled on rice - a bit like Furikake.

The small dishes with tongs are samples which you can freely taste. Probably not a good idea to bring a long a bowl of rice while trying them all out though - or this lady will stab you in the gut with a pickle.

The store on the left of the photo has 7 digits for its telephone number. Telephone numbers became 8 digits in 1991 (not including the area code). Thanks to Twitter comrades for helping me with the answer ^^;

There is also a store for folks who have a frog fetish.

The red things are called "Daruma" which has the face of Bodhidharma painted on it. The eyes are blank for a reason - when setting a goal for yourself, you fill in one eye and when you complete the goal then you can fill in the other eye. They had small Dollfie sized ones which I forgot to pick up on the way back to the station ToT.

In the grounds of Taishakuten shrine which was founded way back in 1629.

In the shrine grounds, one will see this deity statue. What one should do first is purify one hands using the water on the side and then take a pail of the same water to pour over the statue.

Once that's done, take one of the brown scrubbing things (Tawashi) and give the statue a good scrub around the same area that you want your own body to be healed.

My turn with the pail of water.

I was diagnosed with spinal hernia a few years ago meaning that my lower back area is in constant pain. I need to rest one arm on my knee when bending over to prevent me from yelling out in pain ^^; Me give the statue a good scrub around the back.

Another well of purifying water.

A quick snap outside the main building before exploring more.

Outside many shrines one will usually see a box just like the blue one here. Stand in front of it, throw in a few coins (a 5 yen coin if possible), clap and then close your eyes and say a prayer. 5 yen in Japanese is pronounced "Go en" which is the same pronunciation as "ご縁" meaning "Good karma."

Many shrines will require you to take off your shoes, stilts, snorkeling or skiing footwear if you are wearing any.

However, walking around the shrine buildings without shoes made the biting cold feel worse ^^;

The shrine store that sells charms and amulets which bring good luck and ward off evil. More about charms and amulets in the Japanese New Year post.

Found a flower called Ero-dee.

Time to explore the rest of the Shibamata area.

Some food stalls here which one would typically find during Autumn or Winter festivals.

After walking for a bit we come across Edogawa River which has huge fields on each side - just like the ones you see in anime.

Part of Edogawa River is called Yakiri [矢切] and one can take a small ferry boat that crosses the river which is called "Yakiri no Watashi" [矢切の渡し]. The boat is manually powered and costs 100 yen per person.

The ride is silent apart from the sound of water hitting the sides of the boat. Peaceful and calm.

The other end of the river in sight. The Yakiri no Watashi has been operating like this for hundreds of years since the Edo period and its nice that they kept the tradition going. it only takes a few minutes to get to the other side.

Probably wont pass any safety standards but this is what it was like back then and I love how they kept it the same.

The last time you done the Japanese to English test was from raw text which one could have copy/pasted into a dictionary - this is the final test before I contact you for part time work - translate this into English.

At this time of year there is not particularly a lot going on that visitors may find interesting. The locals however are enjoying some frisbee, baseball, jogging, football or badminton in the large fields which are free for anybody to use.

One of the things I love about Japanese vending machines is that they have hot drinks - the can alone will warm you up just by holding it in yer hands.
Convenient stores also sell hot drinks like this but the ones in the vending machines tend to be warmer. 120 yen.

Soon became overcast. Tokyo Skytree visible in the background - probably be visible from all around Tokyo.

Heading back to the station.

When picking up some snacks, be careful of the pigeons which may decide to drop a parcel on your food - would be an interesting experience if some pigeon droppings landed on your snack and you took a bite without looking.

At first this looked like a fried frog - tis actually some squid.

Shibamata is a great place to spend a peaceful afternoon to enjoy more of the traditional Japan - much recommended.
More places to visit in Tokyo and other parts of Japan listed up below.

Shinjuku in the Winter

Continuing the "Japan in the Winter" series of photos. Today we take a look at the commercial district of Shinjuku. Here you will find a load of offices, restaurants, underground malls and shops.
Shinjuku used to be my hub when I first arrived in Japan. I used to take the Seibu Shinjuku line from Shinjuku out to Higashi Fushimi [東伏見] where we used to stay.

First photo is of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building where you can go up to the observatory deck for free and take photos. They dont allow tripods though.

Get off at Shinjuku station on one of the many lines including the JR Yamanote.
[gmap=35.69101, 139.70026]

Folks lining up to buy a lottery ticket. We buy lottery from time to time too - have won a couple of thousand yen from time to time ^^;
How many of you pick up lottery tickets?

When Krispy Kreme first opened in Japan, the queues would go on forever.

At this time of year the city is filled with Christmas decorations.

Looks like quite a few of you are Evangelion fans - but exactly how many of you?
There is a poll embedded in this article.
There is a poll embedded in this article.

After watching the Hobbit, I'll have more lines to say then just "My Precioussssss."

How many of you have seen the movie already and how was it?
There is a poll embedded in this article.

Wear Japanese food samples about your person.

Reminds me of the good ol days.

How to draw kawaii and ecchi characters by Refeia-sensei who has already illustrated Mirai-chan for us.

I think thats the NTT building.

"First Kitchen" and "Fast Kitchen" is pronounced exactly the same in Japanese.

"The Big Issue" newspapers are also sold here in Japan by the homeless folks.

Toranoana Shinjuku branch.

There is a lot of psychology going on here outside this chemist - the layout and colours. Can you guess what they are before I talk about it in a separate post?

Conveyor belt sushi can be identified with the kanji [回転寿司] (kaiten sushi).

Note the Negishi [ねぎし] sign top left corner at 3F - this is the most delicious yakiniku restaurant chain in Japan by my books. Meat is grillled and brought to you in a set meal. You must try. Its available all over Japan.

In restaurants like these, you'll find cooks making noodle near the window side to attract passer-by.

Arcade exclusive figures.

Now on the West side of Shinjuku.

A load of card game oriented game machines designed to take money from little kids.

Over 200 Gacha filled with goodies.

I love that Kirino illustration!

Yep - Starbucks is everywhere in Japan too.

The Cocoon Tower home to probably the coolest school on the planet.

Shinjuku West exit is where you want to head to see all the skyscrapers.

Heading up the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building observation deck.

Great views of Tokyo from up here.

You dont need to go to the Tokyo Sky Tree to get Sky Tree goodies ^^;

The evening sets into Shinjuku.

Try exploring some of the backstreets of Shinjuku - full of character and very Bladerunner-ish.

Looks like a movie set - but nope - just another day in Japan.

Yep - Gangnam Style influence in Japan too.

In Japan, we still use name seals called Inkan [印鑑].

Hyosatsu [表札] is the name given to the bit of plastic or wood with your name on it that you stick outside your house or office.

Studio Alta on the left - a popular meeting spot.

Bic Camera and Uniqlo get together and open Bicqlo - a mix of electronic products and apparel.

This is the store where you can buy durian ^^;

"Please sell your figures to us"
How many of you have bought second hand figures?
There is a poll embedded in this article.

And you can check out what Shinjuku looks like in the Summer!

Merry Christmas folks! How has the festive season been for you so far? Get anything nice? Or given stuff that does not tickle your fancy? If you feel you got something not so useful - please remember that its the thought that counts! You can always sell on eBay after ^^;

Anyway, for the past 5 years my daughters would traditionally get together for a festive photoshoot. I'm still in Malaysia right now but with the help of comrade Alphond and his 2 daughters, we were able to take a festive photo card for you. There are also a load of festive greetings over at figure.fm.

All the girls are dressed up (from left to right) Mirai Suenaga in Maid, Solar Marine, Summer School Uniform and Cheerleader gear.
There is a poll embedded in this article.

And here is a greeting card from the Moekana/Moekanji crew!

And here are the festive daughter photos starting back in 2008 with Saber.

Christmas 2009 featured Karin, Saber, Nanoha, Aoi and Ryomo.

Christmas 2010 featured Nanoha and Aoi.

In Christmas 2011, Yuki joined the gang.

Meanwhile back in Japan just before I left for Malaysia, 10 girls gather for a quick group shot.

Anyway, its been great in Malaysia so far. I'm extending my stay in here to work on rolling out the Culture Japan brand throughout the country though projects like Touch n Go while also trying to spend as much time as possible with readers.

Another reason why I'm here for an extended stay is because my next event is the Thailand Game Show where we are going to set up booth - I'll also be talking there too. Will be traveling up to Bangkok from here.

Kuala Lumpur by day - a quick snap after dumping off the washing at the coin laundry. Keep your mince pies on my Twitter to find out when the next gathering is!

She's 1/6 scale, retails at 12,600 yen and will be out in March - based on artwork by Tony Taka-sensei.

Cool pose, great sculpting and a lovely set of eyes ^^;

And this is what she would look like around your workspace.

The other day we took a look at the flagship store of Animate in Ikebukuro - today we take a look at all the Fujoshi goodies that they have - its so much that I'm dedicating a whole post to it ^^;
If BL (Boys Love), Yaoi and merchandise of good looking boys is your cuppa tea then you will probably want to pay them a visit soon.

If you are not familiar with the term "fujoshi" then it means "female otaku" and is written like 腐女子 [ふじょし]。

The address of the Animate Ikebukuro branch as follows - get off at JR Ikebukuro station on the Yamanote line.
東京都豊島区東池袋1-20-7
Tokyo toshimaku higashiikebukuro 1-20-7
[gmap=35.731284, 139.715832]

A load of fujoshi lining up for goodies!
There is a poll embedded in this article.

CF12 Culture Japan Booth

Comic Fiesta - Malaysia's longest running convention that focuses on animation, comics and games. Up until now due to filming in Tokyo, I've never been able to attend and have only seen it in photos and video - what I saw was an exciting looking anime event but now that I've experienced it first hand I can tell you that no photo or video will be able to express just how awesome CF is - you simply must experience it first hand next year!

We had a booth at CF - our first booth in Malaysia where we actually sold stuff. As with Singapore, I was not sure what to expect - especially after many folks complained about the prices of the T-shirts on Facebook and Twitter ><

We ended up selling over 1300 Moekana T-shirts, several hundred posters and Mirai Carry Cases. The queue was so long that it looped around the booth once and then trailed back up to the entrance of the hall. I shed a tear when I saw so many supporters and at the same time felt really bad for making everybody wait for so long ><

The Mirai Suenaga brand seems to be growing much of late and its thanks to your support - just like from these awesome cosplayers!

Our Culture Japan Mirai Kopitiam booth - the nicest booth we've had to date - a few improvements over Singapore and we've made learnings to make the next one even better.

A few of our team members from Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore!

Another reason why our booth was jam packed - Touch n Go.
Apologies to folks who queued up for hours only to be told they sold out. Touch n Go apologizes too><

Touch n Go brought more stock to Culture Japan Night Kuala Lumpur and will be bringing more including 4 new designs to Culture Japan Night Penang.
I'm setting up a company in Malaysia now and once thats done we will work on rolling out Mirai Suenaga Touch n Go to the rest of the country.

This is our stock room at the beginning of day one...

And this is what we had left at the end of day two.

We had two Moekana T-shirt designs that we sold at Singapore...

And two new ones for CF.
Now currently working on logistics and payments to roll Culture Japan Apparel out to the rest of the world.

We had a graffiti wall for the first time and had to change the paper about 3 times as it filled up so quickly! Took photos and will post them in a separate post.

The start of the queue.

The queue went on...

...and on...

...and on...

...and on...

...and ended up near the entrance.

The folks at KLCC (Kuala Lumpur Convention Center) came over to warn us that our queue was preventing normal folks from coming in so after a while and for the second day, we wrapped the queue around the booth ><

Again, apologies for making you wait for so long and also to KLCC! This is our second time doing this and are learning a lot - we will get better at this and hope to make it a better experience for you next time.

As for folks who felt our stuff was expensive - I've distributed the original Photoshop files of Mirai illustrations so that you can print your own T-shirts and wot not for free - only for your own personal use though ^^;

Also, I encourage you to make friends in the queue so that if you buy more than two T-shirts, you get discounts.

I'm going to leave you with a wall of photos as I go and prep more CF coverage but before I leave, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your continued support - it means a lot to Mirai and me!

Thanks to Arka, Kodomut and Solomon for taking some of these photos.
